110 kilometres north west of Melbourne lies the historical town of Ballarat, once a thriving gold town that was the site of the world's richest gold mine in its early years.
Ballarat is the one gold rush city in Australia that has managed to retain a strong semblance to that period of its history, so much of it's early architecture and charm is still in place. This makes it an interesting and exciting place to visit with a campervan hire, and the abundance of attractions in and around the city will ensure you will have plenty to fill your holiday with.
The biggest attraction here is the award winning Sovereign Hill, which is a recreated living and breathing gold town, where you can experience what the gold rush of the 1850's was actually like. The creek running through the town has real gold which visitors are able to pan for, and for the brave there is an underground adventure into the world of deep mining.
Away from the gold and to the city surrounds there are over 20 wineries within a short distance of the town, so hop into your motorhome and tour the cellar doors to sample the local wines. Fertile soils mean rich farmlands, so why not pick up some of the local farm produce while you are touring round as well. If you are lucky enough to be here in March you will witness the large Begonia population flowering and coating the landscape in a sea of colour.
Ballarat is a haven for shoppers with a broad range of specialty stores, so if you want a break from touring in your campervan hire Melbourne then you will no doubt be kept occupied within the city. Visit Ballarat's Fine Art Gallery for some grand examples of foreign and local artwork, and for a tour of the city unlike any other take a ride on the vintage Ballarat Tramway.
